BOOKS BY FATHER AMBROSE WALSH

Since his retirement, Father Ambrose has written three books which we are delighted to recommend.

AT PRAYER WITH THE CHURCH

In this book Ambrose Walsh shows the way to the feasts of Easter and Pentecost and unearths a year-round treasure in the liturgy of the church.

CALLED AND SENT

The Holy Spirit radically changes people and history.  This was the experience of the Second Vatican Council, when the Church rediscovered the charismatic dimension as essential to her identity. Fr Ambrose Walsh traces the work of the Holy Spirit in the prophets of the Old Testament, and shows how the fathers of the Church explored further the way the Spirit is revealed in the New Testament.  He also gives an intensely personal witness to the Spirit's action in his own life.

I heartily recommend this book to those who wish to live their Catholic Christian lives at a deeper level, ready to take their part in the “new evangelisation”
(Bishop Edwin Regan, Bishop Emeritus of Wrexham)

SHALL I RENEW MY BAPTISMAL PROMISES NEXT EASTER?

The renewal of Baptismal promises marks the continual entering into the mystery of God's love for us. It marks our recognition of the daily need for conversation, which is at the heart of the Christian journey. In exploring the implications of the promises we make and the guidance we receive by being faithful to Christ, this book provides a valuable tool for the Church at large and each of her members to discover together 'treasures both new and old'.

During the Easter Vigil we enter into the truth that sin and death are conquered by the risen life of Christ. We celebrate the fact that that we share that victory through the new life which Baptism gives. In this book, Fr. Ambrose explains that this is no mere external ritual.”
(Archbishop George Stack, Archbishop of Cardiff)

OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS

RECOMMENDED FOR PRAYER GROUPS - BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT

New Life Publishing, a company owned by Goodnews Books has, on behalf of the International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services doctrinal commission, published an excellent and quite authoritative study on the Catholic Doctrine concerning the grace known as "Baptism in the Holy Spirit".

We recommend this book to every prayer group. It comes from the heart of the Church and should offer a most orthodox account of what a lot of people outside Renewal have no idea about. It would help members of prayer groups and enable them to help others.

TESTIMONY

"For the last 8/9 months I have suffered from back pain. Mostly it is age-related and also when driving and working on a computer. I have been seeing a physiotherapist every couple of weeks and need to take pain-killers and anti-inflammatory tablets on a regular basis. Mornings are worst as I stagger from one piece of furniture to another. I have bought cushions to sit on, back supports for my car and chair, and heated pads. I can't drive for any length of time and even lying in bed is uncomfortable.

I listened to one of Derek's talks from Carmarthen [Contemplative Prayer] in which he mentioned the pain he had with his sciatic nerve, and how he asked God to touch him. So, I thought, well if it works for Derek I will ask too. I prayed to be touched, I prayed in the shower, I prayed while cooking, I prayed all the time. Two days later I went to an exercise class; it wasn't our usual teacher and she said, "I'm going to do back exercises." During the class I felt pins and needles down my back.

When I woke next day, I was pain-free. I have been pain-free ever since (which is about two weeks). I am aware occasionally of my back, but I haven't needed any pain relief since."
